The Psychodynamic Therapy Process

Psychodynamic psychotherapy is an evidence-based practice that uses language and the therapeutic relationship to increase insight and decrease suffering. "Psychodynamic" refers to approaches that recognize the powerful role of the unconscious mind- the idea that much of our behavior, thoughts, and feelings stem from motivations outside of our awareness. By bringing these motivations into awareness, we gain greater agency over our inner lives and can make more informed choices about how we behave and relate to others.

This type of therapy is a slow and intentional process of personal exploration. The therapy room becomes a container where, over time, you can explore anything that feels important to you. Here you have a unique opportunity to put words to your thoughts, feelings, and impulses in the presence of a safe and supportive other and to experience what it means to be truly seen and heard. That experience, in itself, can be both illuminating and transformative.

Over time, what once felt overwhelming, frightening, or unbearably painful begins to take on a new shape. Monsters become less threatening when they are pulled out of the dark and into the light, and we metabolize our experiences more effectively when we are no longer alone with our pain.

Why Talking Helps: The Foundation of Psychodynamic Counseling 

Throughout this process, language becomes our guide- a way to bring awareness to what may have been previously out of reach or unacknowledged. In doing so, we also engage the cerebral cortex, the part of the brain responsible for rational thought, decision-making, and self-regulation. This partnership between language and brain function helps us begin to unravel the complex web of thoughts and emotions that shape our actions.

As your therapist, my role is to guide you toward the unexpressed parts of yourself and to help you develop a sense of self that feels deeper and more authentic. We begin by building trust and relationship, and from that foundation, we explore. Talking within the safety of the therapeutic container is a unique experience, distinct from talking with a friend or loved one. While outside support is essential, our friends and family bring their own needs and dynamics to our relationships with them. Therapy is different. My only motivation here is to help you know yourself more fully and to live a life that feels more authentic, more free, and with less pain.
